A Breakdown of Each Year of Law School

Posted on December 7, 2021January 1, 2022 By admin

Are you looking to become a lawyer? If so, chances are you want to know more about what students in law school experience. While it’s important to know what to expect in your law school years, it’s also important to prepare yourself mentally and physically for what these years may bring. Whether you want to work as a personal injury lawyer or any other type of lawyer, you’ll be more prepared to take on your career by being proactive and reading articles that give you insight into your future law school experience. You will benefit from knowing what your professors, colleagues, and studies will be like for the next three years if you want to help people get back to their lives and get the maximum compensation for their serious injuries or even wrongful death of a family member as a personal injury lawyer.

Moreover, if you’re looking to become a multifaceted lawyer like Malliha Wilson, who has experience with human rights, labor law, complex litigation and was the assistant deputy attorney general for the Government of Ontario, then you will want to do a little bit more research to see how you can make all that happen. While it may sound almost impossible to become all of those things or open your own law firm like Malliha’s Nava Wilson LLP, you should know that it’s most definitely possible.

Here are some things you can expect throughout each year of your law school endeavor.

Undergraduate Years

Before getting into law school, it’s important that you ace your undergraduate years and develop a set of skills for studying, passing your test, taking notes, and networking with your peers. All of these skills will help you become a better law student. Law school will require you to be an avid reader, a natural researcher, and an assertive person when speaking with your colleagues and professors. Your undergraduate years will be your training course for your personal development prior to making it to the big leagues in law school.

First Year

Furthermore, as you enter your first year of law school, you will be faced with basic courses regarding law topics such as torts, criminal law, property, and legal research. You will also have courses on civil procedure, contracts, constitutional law, and legal research and writing. Prior to beginning this first year in law school, your professors will expect you to have read and internalized a given syllabus and reading material for your first day of class. As a first-year student in law school, you will be expected to dedicate several hours of intense study each day with minimal lunch and dinner breaks. It’s also important that you prepare yourself to answer unexpected questions about applying the rule of law from your previous night’s reading in front of your class when called on by your professor.

Second Year

For your second year of law school, you may be able to choose your classes based on your interests and recommendations. These can include courses that involve administrative topics, law, evidence, business organization, and federal income taxation, and other courses that are built on your first-year classes. You can take this opportunity to hone in on a particular area of interest, but if you’re not settled on a specific area of law, be sure to include a variety of classes with distinguished professors in your law program.

Third Year

Lastly, your third year of law school will require you to focus on graduating, your bar exam, and landing a job as an experienced lawyer at a law firm with a successful legal team. You will also be required to meet outstanding graduation requirements such as volunteering hours in a legal capacity at a government agency or clinic. Be sure to plan ahead to take your bar exam, as most jurisdictions will only offer two test dates per year.

Use these tips to prepare for each year of law school and take on a new level of responsibility for your career.
